A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT IS EVERYBODY’S JOB

The gravity of the world’s environmental problems is well understood, and society’s awareness that this is one of the most pressing issues of our time is well established. Every day, we hear and read about concerns related to climate change, pollution, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity. And while governments, businesses, and organizations play a crucial role in addressing these problems, individual contributions are equally significant.

Often, people and small companies feel that their own actions are insignificant, which can lead to them losing interest in trying to address environmental problems. This is a mistake because in fact, the aggregation of small, incremental steps by individuals can transform into significant collective action, helping to turn the tide. In short, we can all do our part.

Let’s start with transport. Do we really need to drive large cars to go everywhere? Doha has built one of the most modern metro systems in the world, and by being 100% electric, it results in a much cleaner form of transport with reduced emissions of greenhouse gases and pollutants. If you haven’t ridden it yet, give it a try! It is comfortable, clean, and safe. And if the metro is not convenient for you, then consider buying an electric car if you can afford it. Today’s electric cars allow owners to drive around Doha for an entire week without a need to recharge. By buying electric cars, you can contribute to building the demand, which in turn provides the incentive for car dealers to stock more electric cars. This is a virtuous cycle that can accelerate transport electrification in Doha, as it has happened in other cities the world.

Another area where you can make a difference is in your use of water. The water we use comes from the sea after going through a process of desalination. But desalination uses a lot of energy and represents the second source of greenhouse gas emissions in Qatar. Watering lawns and landscaping with plants –which, in Qatar’s hot environment, requires a lot of water – represents an inefficient use of resources and contributes to climate change. Have you considered landscaping with native species that are better adapted to desert conditions and require less water? Have you installed faucets that save water in your home? Do you leave water running unnecessarily? Saving water is easy and an extremely effective way to reduce your environmental damage.

You can also reduce energy use in your home through simple measures such as enhancing insulation to make air conditioning more efficient, using energy saving lightbulbs, and buying appliances with better energy efficiency. This is very easy to do – simply look at the labels on each appliance that indicates the energy efficiency in comparison with similar models.

In summary, individual contributions to addressing environmental problems are integral to the overall effort to protect and enhance our environment. While collective action at the governmental and corporate levels is critically important, people have the power to influence change through their daily choices, advocacy, and involvement in environmental initiatives.

With over 450 activities organized nationwide, this year’s record-breaking Qatar Sustainability Week – organized by Earthna, a member of Qatar Foundation – provided an opportunity for individuals and corporations to highlight their efforts towards sustainability. People and organizations came together to demonstrate how they are doing their part to ensure we all live in a cleaner world. But perhaps more importantly, as a society we all learned to adopt environmentally conscious behaviors and mindsets that can contribute to creating a lasting and impactful movement for change. We thank all of you that participated in this year’s fantastic event, and look forward to Qatar Sustainability Week 2024!
