Project Earthlings at Kings College Doha

Project Earthlings is a scalable, schools-based conservation programme designed to inspire the next generation through a unique, embedded conservation curriculum. This international, multi-school initiative aims to nurture environmentally conscious global citizens who understand and care for the natural world.

What are we doing at Kings College Doha? Ongoing throughout the full academic year and during Qatar Sustainability Week

At the heart of Project Earthlings is its conservation curriculum, which takes pupils on a structured journey from curious learners to conservation literate global citizens, starting from KG1 through to Y11. Each year, students explore three to four key environmental messages that guide their learning and understanding.

For example, this year our Year 7 students will be exploring:

• I understand what is meant by human-wildlife conflict.

• I can name the main human (anthropogenic) threats to our oceans and identify measures to mitigate them.

• I know what ‘sense of place’ means and why it is important in conservation.

• I can explain what human behaviour is and describe examples of positive versus negative environmental actions.

Raising Awareness

Kings College Doha will also be recognising five international environmental days throughout the school year. These will be explored through assemblies, videos, and classroom discussions to raise awareness and encourage meaningful conversations.

This year, our focus days are:

• Earth Hour

• Endangered Species Day

• World Bee Day

• World Oceans Day

• International Sea Turtle Day

Research Projects

In addition, we are taking part in two exciting research projects this year:

Beach Litter Tagging – Some of our Duke of Edinburgh students are contributing to a study that involves tagging litter from drone photographs of a beach. The data collected will help researchers in many ways including, determining how effective drone technology could be for assessing litter in hard-to-reach areas, and whether humans can accurately identify types of litter from aerial images.

Aquaponics Project – A group of Year 6 pupils are participating in a Beyond the Books session focused on aquaponics. They are learning how this sustainable farming system works, designing and building their own setup in school to grow herbs and vegetables and keep fish. Their project also includes collaboration with a school in Riyadh, helping pupils understand how teamwork and shared ideas can lead to innovative solutions, just as in a university or research environment.

After School Clubs and Monthly Calendar challenge

Several Project Earthlings co-curricular clubs run after school, offering pupils more opportunities to get involved.

Younger students can take part in monthly sustainability challenges, submitting photos of their efforts such as:

• Bringing a single-use plastic–free lunch and snack to school.

• Spending a day travelling without cars—walking, scooting, cycling, or skating instead.

• Planting bee-friendly flowers such as marigolds, lavender, basil, or local blooms.

Environmental themes are also being woven into Arabic Department lessons, and Project Earthlings will again play a key role in our school Iftar, where reducing waste will be a focus.

Looking Ahead

We are continuing to build on these initiatives and are excited to have recently registered for the Eco-Schools programme. Looking forward, we are eager to begin planning our new school garden, which will further enhance learning opportunities and bring sustainability to life on campus.

Project Earthlings is an exciting and meaningful programme that continues to grow, empowering our pupils to make a real difference for our planet.

This initiative is for the full academic year and ongoing.
