EcoHeroes Film Challenge
The Short Film Lab welcomes aspiring filmmakers of all levels to join the 3rd annual EcoHeroes Film Challenge, a premier STEAM program held in celebration of Qatar Sustainability Week. We are delighted to continue to serve as a community partner with this unique platform to promote the nation’s vision for sustainability and engage the community in promoting awareness of Qatar's sustainable development goals.
The EcoHeroes Film Challenge invites teams of 4-6 people (open to 6 years+) to produce an original short film, of 3 minutes or less that engages with an aspect of eco responsibility. Projects must showcase innovative solutions for a greener future or illustrate the consequences of ignoring environmental waste. Registration is free and open to the public. Individuals may also register to be matched with a team.
Please note this is a two stage program: Kick-Off and Film Screening. The registered Team Leader must attend both portions.

Kick Off: a specialized filmmaking workshop to equip teams with the essential skills needed to create a compelling short film
Film Competition: a public screening opportunity for all films made during the Challenge, with a panel of judges and chance to win prizes

Guidelines:
Teams may include 4-6 people for the Planning and Production portions. Teams may be of participants from 6 years old and above. They must include at least one female aged 13 or older in a leadership role. Teams with participants 12 and under will need an adult member.
Please note that attendance at both events is mandatory for the Team Leader. Participation in this workshop is a prerequisite for entry; failure of the team leader to attend will result in the team being unable to participate in the EchoHeroes challenge.
FAQs
- Can I submit a previously made film? To ensure fairness for all teams, all films must be made during the week of the challenge.
- Can we begin working on our film now? While you may discuss roles—such as writer, director, producer, or actor—and cast your project ahead of time, no writing or filming is permitted until after the Kick Off Workshop.
- Can I use A to write my scripI? All work submitted must be original material made by the team and copyright free (including music) No AI tools may be used to write a script or provide footage for projects submitted to the EcoHeroes Challenge.
- This is so exciting! Where can I see past EchoHeroes Films? Check out the 2022 Best Overall Film Cost of Convenience made by students at the Sherborne Senior School. This project went on to be named an Official Selection at several international film festivals including the Glass Ceiling Breakers (NY), Climate Changemaker Teen Festival (CA)
- I want to enter but I don't have a team Please register if you are interested in making a film! We will help match you with a team.
- I want to enter but I've never made a film before. Don't worry! Register and come to the workshop. We will do the rest.
- I want to enter but I've made many many films. We'd love to have you. Films compete in a range of categories so we welcome filmmakers of all experience levels.

About the Short Film Lab
The Short Film Lab is a Community Service Organization based in Qatar that offers free filmmaking programs to young women aged 15-23. We also support them in submitting and competing at international film festivals. To date we have trained 30+ new female filmmakers in scriptwriting, directing, production and editing in STEAM related topics, including, most recently, Narrative Medicine. Together they have completed 20 festival level competitive films. Several of the films, including a short documentary about the Lab, have been nominated and won awards in their categories.
