Al Wakrah By-Pass (P015) Expressway Project
Larsen and Toubro (L&T)
Sustainable construction practices are a core value of Larsen and Toubro (L&T). Operating in Qatar, examples of L&T’s initiatives that promote efficient resource use, diversion of waste from landfill and recycling include the following:
1. Reuse of waste asphalt on temporary access roads as well as sharing of this asphalt waste with neighboring contractors. This both reduces the quantity of waste disposed at landfills (where capacity is under pressure) and mitigates nuisance dust caused by construction activities that can negatively impact the public.
2. Reuse of building rubble. Building rubble is crushed and reused as backfill material at excavations. This diverts the quantity of waste that would unnecessarily be disposed at landfill sites and reduces the project's resource consumption.
3. Use of abstracted groundwater for dust suppression. The multi-chamber design of the project's lagoon ensures that the quality of groundwater used for the purpose of dust suppression meets the quality requirements stipulated by the MME and PWA.
4. Examples of further diversion of waste from landfills, efficient resource consumption and reuse / recycling are as follows:
- Reuse of waste wood to construct sign boards, material storage boxes and furniture (benches / tables) for worker welfare areas;
- Recycling of plastic jersey barriers and plastic piping;
- Project awareness initiatives to reduce paper consumption including, a) Printing only double-sided, b) Collection and reuse of waste paper for various purposes such as signage for laminating; and
- Recycling of batteries.
5. L&T manages all waste streams according to Qatari Environmental Laws and international best practices.
L&T is committed to finding new ways to increase the efficiency of construction practices, promoting sustainable development, educating all staff on the importance of respecting the environment as well as each individual's responsibility to the future of Qatar, and the globe as a whole.
