Pathways to Sustainability - Day 3: Circular Economy Nº2: - Energy Transition, Renewables Generation and Water Sustainability

Earthna Center for a Sustainable Future

This workshop is in partnership with QEERI, where three vital strands in Qatar’s progress towards sustainability and resource resilience are examined as follows: -

  • Energy Modelling - Understanding the economics and policy of the energy transition have never been more important to Qatar than now as the nation seeks to plot a path toward decarbonisation in accordance with the Paris Agreement – the advantage of modelling being that different scenarios and their consequences can be examined – so what is the optimal route for Qatar?
  • Water Sustainability - Qatar’s water supply is dependent on desalination which is usually perceived as being unsustainable and not environmentally friendly. Looking into its future development, could Qatar’s approach to water management, including utilising a raft of non-conventional water resources, become truly sustainable; and if so, how?
  • Renewables and Microgeneration – Is Qatar’s response to decarbonisation to simply ‘green the grid’ or is there a role for the encouragement of microgeneration to enhance the nation’s energy resilience?
